January 2005

Being the talented programmer, I have yet to spend time figuring out how this could be more blog-like. As you can see, you can’t directly link to an individual article of mine. One other (un)feature is the inability to directly comment. I have a link to comment but that just comes in to my mail. The plus being I get to practice censorship. I choose what you get to see. I’ve received two responses to two different entries. Here’s one against my aluminum can rant (more…)

I’m not much of the Mac fan, let alone user. There are multiple reasons.

One: my propensity to be a cheap ass. Two: I don’t know how to do anything on them accept start Oregon Trail and eject a disk by sliding it to the trash (????) Three: With all my tooling around with computers, I don’t know much about tearing a Mac apart and making it do something different or how to bleed every bit of usable life out of a Mac like I can a PC. I have 19 years logged in front of some PC/DOS based machine (more…)

I know very little about the social security crisis. However, lately I have been seeing several articles and mentions of it online and in magazines I have lifetime subscriptions to. Following the rule of triangulation, I have decided to sit down and read some of these discussions. I am moving very slowly for multiple reasons. To be honest, it can be a boring but important topic. Also I know so little about it that I have to go back and read just about every word a second time. I am still reading and still trying to understand, but as I read, some parts really stick out to me. I will probably talk about several parts. Today, I would like to talk about one of those.

The part that really fascinates me is the numbers and statistics thrown in to it to support either side. (more…)

I ain’t no hippie tree hugger, and I don’t know much behind this rant but I’m going to do it anyway. I can’t count the number of times I have carried around an empty aluminum can looking for a place to recycle it while on campus.

When I moved out to Iowa, I was blown away by the idea that not only am I drinking a soda, I’m getting “paid” five cents to drink it. I may not be a hippie, and I’m certainly no economist. However, I understand that I really paid five cents more initially for that soda than I would had I still lived in the great state of Ohio (more…)

On a side note, I am typing this on a really sweet tablet PC model that I will be borrowing from work for a while. It holds the position of notebook, folder and textbooks all in one. Plus, I am connecting to the Internet most everywhere I sit and able to index and organize everything.

I am a bit self conscious about using a sleek looking model of a laptop in public. I don’t like to draw attention to myself (more…)

Finally, they’re going to give those heathens some good time religion. Zondervan, the largest Bible seller has been allowed to run an ad campaign in Rolling Stone, as well as several other hip, secular venues, including The Onion.

On this, I say good for them. Good for everyone. I say this as a Christian. But most likely not with the motivation one would expect a Christian to have. I think the idea itself is kinda hokey. Let’s create a “jive talk” Bible and advertise it in all these “jive talkin’” magazines. (more…)

As you know by now, Johnny Carson passed away this weekend. I was just at the age where I didn’t really get to catch his show. I have seen a lot of clips from all the memory reels and infomercials and remember seeing some stuff. I’m sad that he is gone and even sadder that he wasn’t on the Tonight Show up until his death.

With that said, I’ve been watching a few things on TV with little recaps of his career. One of those shows was Jay Leno. I’m sure the death hits closer to Jay Leno because he took over for Johnny and also boosted his own career on Johnny’s show. (more…)

As I finished up my 2004 declarations for good albums, I listened to two new albums I got ahold of. They are by the same guy and were released on the same day. As a side note, his singles from each album set a milestone of being the only time that an artist has had the number one and number two spot on the singles charts. I think P. Diddy or Nelly had one in first and was only featured in some other dude’s second place spot. More research in that article shows that it was Biggie’s “Mo Money, Mo Problems.” (more…)

I write to first ask everyone, who has been hitting refresh every hour to see if I updated for the past month, to forgive me. It’s easy to say “I’m sorry” when you know that no one is there to judge. What are you going to do write me a mean email?

I also know how dick it is because whether you like me or not or whether you really think it’s that important to read what I think/am doing, you still read. (more…)
